A month without social media

There’s no denying that the world is overwhelming in more ways than one at the moment. More often than not I find myself doom scrolling social media and call it “staying informed”. Given everything that I need to prioritize and focus on within my own family and community, I can’t keep giving away my precious time to apps that are keeping me removed from them.

Please don’t get it twisted. This is not me saying that I think social media is an all bad place. All I’m saying is that I need a reset so I can continue to show up as a productive member of society.

Not that I have to explain myself to anyone, but in case you are interested here is a brief summery of what I hope this month entails for me.

How I plan to reset

Starting March 1, 2025 and ending no sooner than March 31, 2025 I will not log into any of my social media apps. Those include but are not limited to Instagram, Threads, Facebook, and Tik Tok.

Read-

In addition to being off social media I am planning on implementing some of the productivity ideas from the book Feel Good Productivity by Ali Abdaal

I have been listing to the audio edition and have really enjoyed the mindset shift that productivity can feel like more than burnout and stress. Ali actually sparked the idea for this social media break.

I plan on getting a physical copy of the book so I can take notes and add more of Ali’s tips into my normal routine.

Not all my reading needs to be for self improvement. I LOVE me a good audio book. In fact if it weren’t for audio books I wouldn’t have gotten to enjoy so many great stories. I want to prioritize taking a slow moment to re-connect with a part of myself I haven’t seen in a while. Maybe it’s all self improvement after all?

Write

The last few years have left me feeling more and more at a loss for words and how to communicate my thoughts clearly. During the month I want to take advantage of writing things down. It can be in a journal, a note on my phone, or here on my blog. The point is just to start. This blog post is the kick off.

Observe

I am really looking forward to relishing in small moments of observation. We will be getting baby chicks part way through the month and If nothing else it will be the perfect opportunity to stretch this muscle.

Boredom

Boredom? Yes! I hope I get bored a lot. Boredom often leads to the best ideas! As a kid me and my siblings always came up with the best games after a bought of boredom. Who knows what possibilities my brain at rest will conjure!

Create

This one kind of goes along with boredom. My brain feels in a constant fog taking in all the noise of life. Good and bad. This leaves my brain feeling foggy and at a loss to come up with creative solutions that can help or just add beauty to the world. I am putting zero pressure on myself to do creative things, but I look forward to doing a recap at the beginning of April to see if or what happened.

Relationships

Having lost some core relationships this past year I am trying really hard to hold tight to the community still surrounding me. I am blessed with community both on and offline. It will be good to focus on strengthening those.

That being said, I am really going to miss my social media communities and friends. I am so grateful for the spaces I am part of and the friendships I have made. They have and continue to shape me into the person I am.

I also know that I am not currently showing up the way I want to in those spaces. I hope this break brings me back into alignment with who I am/want to be. That way when I get back to those spaces I’ll be able to fully take in the awesome things they are putting out into the world.

What else?

This break is not for me to blissfully shut away the world’s problems. More than ever I need to show up and take action. I just need to do it in less of a fire hydrant to the face way for a bit. I will stay informed via other outlets so I can regroup and think clearly for the coming months and years.

I think that pretty much sums it up. Unless you catch me posting here I’ll see you in April. Feel free to leave me a comment here if you have any questions, or let me know what you are doing to stay focused on what matters.
