Welcome back! I can’t believe its already week 3! This week I focused on clearing out the space. It involved removing carpet, drywall, and brick. I won’t share a lot about that this week though. Since I wasn’t able to do a deep dive into the design for this space I figured this would be the perfect time to do so. You may have already seen my mood board but here it is again as a refresher.

More important than the design choices where the functions we needed from this space. My first priority was a cozy spot for everyone to gather. Our living room is our favorite place to be. Sometimes we listen to records, play boards games, watch a movie, or read a book. For us this room needs to have cozy seating and lots of storage to accommodate it all.

A big priority for this space was getting the fireplace functioning. All the afore mentioned functions are all made even better in the glow of a fire. The brick fireplace wall couldn’t be salvaged or worked around, so we are starting from scratch. We haven’t decided on a final design choice for it yet, but if its possible I would love to do something with a built in bench.
Another function we wanted to add was access to our side yard. We plan on adding a garden in that area in the future. Since we wanted to add a window next to the fireplace anyway we decided a full light door was a perfect solution. This will make maintaining and caring for the garden quick and easy.

Now that we have covered function lets talk about style! We are going for a 70’s-ish vibe. This home was built in the early 70’s and that era always makes me think of Grandma’s (in the best way possible). My Grandparent’s all had furnishings from that time period and it screams comfort and love to me. Our plan is to make the base of the designs feel original to the house with some more modern day elements layered in.
What is more groovy than wood paneled walls? We will be installing vertical tongue and grove to replicate the vibe, and then painting it to give it a more updated look. We will keep furniture low to the ground with simple lines and have lots of macrame and groovy floral prints layered throughout.

I won’t be sticking to a traditional 70’s color pallet. I bought some awesome floral fabric to make curtains and plan on pulling colors from it for the space. A fuchsia ceiling being a big one. I think it will make a big impact and bring a bit of warmth over having only white everywhere. I also love the way it wall play on the light pink I plan on painting the piano.
That’s all from me this week! Please take a minute to check out what other One Room Challenge Participants are up to this week. Everyone is working so hard and I am so excited to see all their spaces coming together.
